ChApTER

I don’t want to be too much of a pessimist, but I’ve definitely been here, done this before,” Nancy said as she gazed up at the imposing gate with its ornate V at the top. The vast expanse of green lawn seemed to go on forever until it met up with the massive Vandenbrock mansion. “Let’s see how long I go this time before I get kicked out again.”

“One person lives here?” Sean asked.

Nancy nodded. “Well, Mrs. Vandenbrock and several servants.”

“Definitely an impressive place,” Sean said, craning his neck to see everything.

“Check out that turret—and those columns. They must be made of marble.” Nancy said. “The house is even more amazing inside.” She pressed the intercom button. “Mrs. Vandenbrock has some beautiful antiques. Of course,

I didn’t get to see all that much since I was whisked out so quickly.”

“Let’s hope things go differently today,” Sean said forcefully.

Nancy was struck at how nervous the actor seemed. She could see tension all across his face. It was obvious that this meant a great deal to him. Oh, please, she thought as they waited for a reply from the house, let Mrs. Vandenbrock at least see us.

At last, a crackly male voice came through the speaker. “Yes?”

“My name is Nancy Drew, and I’ve come to see Mrs. Vandenbrock,” Nancy said. “I’ve brought a visitor with me, Sean Fletcher.”

“I’m very sorry, Ms. Drew,” the voice replied. “This is not a good time.”

Nancy leaped for the intercom. “Well, when would be a good time?” There was silence from the intercom. “Look, did you hear me? I’ve brought Sean Fletcher She said the last word loudly and distinctly.

“Please wait a moment,” the voice replied.

Nancy and Sean exchanged looks. “I guess that was her butler,” Nancy said.

“I hope she’ll see us,” Sean said.

Poor Sean. He looked so ill at ease, Nancy thought. Well, she couldn’t blame him. In the next few minutes he just might come face-to- face with his long-lost mother. That would be enough to unnerve anyone!

The speaker crackled. “I’m very sorry, but Mrs. Vandenbrock is not receiving visitors today. She asked me to thank you for stop- ping by.”

Nancy watched as the color drained from Sean’s face. No, this couldn’t happen! They were being turned away.

She sprang to action and pressed the intercom button. “Oh, but you don’t understand,” she said in an urgent voice. “We absolutely must see Mrs. Vandenbrock. It’s very important.”

“I’m sorry. I’m afraid that will be impossible.” The voice was detached and impersonal.

This time Sean stepped up to the intercom. “I really must see her. You have no idea how critical this is.”

“And I must insist that you leave now, or I shall be forced to call the police.” The butler’s voice took on a chilly, clipped tone.

Sean turned to Nancy, desperation evident in his eyes. “I can’t believe this. She’s got to see us. This might be my mother, and I have to find out.”

Nancy tried to think of something to say. There simply had to be a way to get Mrs.
